What is FAD

FAD stands for Friends of Art & Design—an all volunteer, non-profit, organization that was founded in 1994. Our purpose is to support the High School of Art & Design, a public high school with a commercial art focus, located at 1075 Second Ave between 56th and 57th Streets. FAD was established by residents of the neighborhood surrounding the High School. Although FAD remains largely a community-based organization, volunteers from many other locations have become active Friends and supporters in recent years. We are people who care deeply about the education and well being of the High School's students.

FAD sponsors many different activities and events. FAD has a tutoring program where volunteers work either one-on-one to help students in specific academic subjects or work directly with teachers in classrooms. We act as chaperones for student visits to cultural institutions. We serve as guest speakers advising students in their fields of interest. We assist students with college applications and we seek internships; part-time, summer and permanent jobs for the students.

All donations to FAD are tax deductible to the fullest extent allowed by law. Working with the administration and faculty, we help fund some of the school's unfunded needs. One of FAD's goals is to help provide some of the new technology that is so critical today. Another, is to help upgrade some of the equipment in the art studios. Still another, is to help improve the physical appearance of the School building. Recently, for example, our money helped to refurbish the art gallery and build the Black Box Theater. We also distribute FAD funds to students, and awards for academic achievement
