I like tutoring Mathematics at HSAD. I see students once or twice a week, coordinating with their teachers and guidnace counselors. Most of my tutees are improving. Students give up their lunch hour to see me, and that dedication is usually the hallmark of a good student.

Working with bright kids is rewarding. Often I see a flash come over their faces as they “ get it ” and they do much better in math from then on. Sometimes they no longer need tutoring after a breakthrough, but they continue to email me questions about math topics or problems that they don't understand.

Some of my students started with me as B students but are doing better now. We go over problems and proofs and we talk about Math theory and practice and how it relates to the world. We’ve had discussions about how Math relates to art, history, religion, philosophy, and our lives.

I know several high school teachers who would love to have mostly top students to teach, but they don’t have that luxury. They have to deal with the unmotivated and the disinterested students as well. It would be great to teach at Bronx Science, Stuyvesant, Andover, or Lawrenceville, but tutoring at HSAD is the next best thing.
